If you are missing one or more teeth, our dentists may recommend a dental bridge. Dental bridges can restore your smile as well as your ability to speak and chew normally by literally “bridging” the gap caused by your missing teeth! Call us at 706-769-1659 to learn more about dental bridges in Watkinsville, Georgia, and schedule your consultation with Dr. Harmon-Smith, Dr. Anthony, and Dr. Watson at Oconee Dental, PC.
A dental bridge is used to fill the space previously occupied by a tooth. Dental bridges are fixed restorations, meaning that they cannot be removed once placed. Your bridge will be anchored in place through the use of two dental crowns, custom made to fit your smile and placed on the teeth next to the area of your missing tooth. These crowns hold the artificial tooth in place so that it will not shift or come loose. Dental bridges can be placed in just two visits to our office, and they are designed to last for many years.
Dental bridges can prevent shifting of your teeth and the subsequent problems with your jaw or bite, and help prevent periodontal disease. Bridges also safeguard the integrity of your existing teeth and help you maintain a healthy, vibrant smile.
There are three main types of bridges:
- Fixed Bridge – this is the most common type of dental bridge, consisting of a filler tooth that is attached to two crowns, and which fits over your existing teeth to stay in place.
- “Maryland” Bridge – this bridge is commonly used to replace missing front teeth. A filler tooth is attached to metal or composite bands, which are then bonded to adjoining teeth.
- Cantilever Bridge – this bridge is used when teeth are only on one side of the missing tooth. It consists of two crowned teeth positioned next to each other on the same side of the empty space. The filler tooth is then connected to the two crowns, and extended into the gap.
